Located on the south shore of Long Island in southwest Nassau County, Freeport is a village in the Town of Hempstead with a population of 43,713 as of the 2010 census. Once an oystering community and a popular resort, today Freeport is a Long Island suburb with a lively commercial waterfront and some light industry.
The village, NYS’s second largest, offers its own electric utility, police, fire, and water departments. The southern section of village land is comprised of several canals with access to the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing is a favorite pastime, and seafood restaurants are prevalent along Freeport’s Nautical Mile.
Surrounding the Village of Freeport are the communities of Baldwin to the west, Merrick to the east and Roosevelt to the north.
