One of ten towns in Suffolk County, the Town of Babylon is located just east of Nassau County, about 20 miles from the Queens, NYC border, and about 30 miles from Manhattan.
Once called South Huntington, renamed New Babylon, the town was officially formed in 1872. Within the Town of Babylon are the villages of Amityville, Babylon and Lindenhurst, and the hamlets of Copiague, Deer Park, East Farmingdale, Gilgo, North Amityville, North Babylon, North Lindenhurst, Oak Beach-Captree, West Babylon, Wheatley Heights and Wyandanch. In the southern part of the town are parts of Jones Beach Island, Captree Island and Fire Island.
The town encompasses a total area of 114.2 square miles, of which 54.2% is water. As of the 2010 census, 213,602 people reside in the Town of Babylon. Major roads include the Southern State Parkway, Robert Moses Causeway, Ocean Parkway, Route 27 and Route 231. The Babylon branch of the Long Island Rail Road is the primary rail line in the Town with stations in Babylon, Lindenhurst, Copiague, Amityville, Pinelawn, Wyandanch and Deer Park. Republic Airport is located in East Farmingdale which is also home to the American Airpower Museum.
The Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) is the town’s primary resource for economic development for companies looking for information in regard to financing and incentives, expansion, relocation and job creation.
Among the places listed in The National Register of Historic Places in the Town of Babylon are The Babylon Library, Babylon Town Hall, Long Island National Cemetery, Nathaniel Conklin House, and Frank W. Smith House. State parks include Belmont State Park, Captree State Park and Robert Moses State Park. Fire Island is a popular summer destination with its pristine beaches, restaurants, and resort communities.
